Stora Enso is addressing an environmental incident that occurred on August 15 at a harvesting site in Kainuu, Finland. Forestry machinery crossed a river in Hukkajoki, endangering the highly vulnerable freshwater pearl mussel population. The company acknowledges the severity of the situation, which is under investigation as a potential aggravated nature conservation offence. "It is evident that our guidelines have not been followed. What has happened is completely contrary to our values and sustainability commitments," says Seppo Parvi, Stora Enso’s Country Manager for Finland.
Stora Enso is cooperating with the authorities and has launched an internal investigation. The company plans to refine its guidelines to prevent future incidents, involving stricter forestry planning, environmental training, and updated information systems. "It is our responsibility to ensure that this never happens again," Parvi stated, adding that Stora Enso will bear environmental and financial responsibility.
Restoration efforts are already underway at Hukkajoki, led by Metsähallitus with Stora Enso's support. Additionally, the company has committed to the LIFE Revives programme, which focuses on freshwater conservation. While acknowledging that this initiative cannot reverse the damage, Stora Enso emphasizes its commitment to sustainability across all operations.
