Smurfit-Stone named M.C. Jackson as VP

Jan 05, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation has named M.C. (Sonny) Jackson as vice president and general manager, Containerboard Mill and Forest Resources division. Jackson succeeds William N. Wandmacher, who retired at the end of 2004. Jackson joined Stone Container Corporation in 1978. He has a BS degree in mechanical engineering from Clemson University and studied pulp and paper science at Northeast Louisiana University. Jackson has held numerous production and management positions at several Smurfit-Stone mills. He served as general manager of the Uncasville, CT, mill, for two years and the Hodge, LA, mill for six years. In 2002, Jackson became vice president of mill operations, where he worked side by side with Wandmacher. “Sonny is well-suited to succeed Bill Wandmacher,” said Patrick J. Moore, Smurfit-Stone chairman, president and chief executive officer. “He has been an integral part of our company for many years, and his duties as vice president of mill operations have prepared him for the responsibility of his new position.” Jackson will continue to be based in Jacksonville, FL. Wandmacher, former vice president and general manager of Smurfit-Stone’s Containerboard Mill and Forest Resources division, retired at the conclusion of 2004 after a paper-industry career that started in 1966. Wandmacher joined the paper industry after earning a degree in pulp and paper science from New York College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, and a second degree in forestry from Syracuse University. He held numerous production and management positions with Container Corporation of America (CCA). Wandmacher was the plant manager at the Brewton, AL, mill, and went on to lead CCA’s Venezuelan mills. He led the mill division for Jefferson Smurfit Corporation (JSC) beginning in 1993 and directed the Smurfit-Stone mill operations since the company’s formation in 1998, the result of the merger between JSC and Stone Container. Under Wandmacher’s leadership, Smurfit-Stone’s Containerboard Mill and Forest Resources division has become a showcase for best practices and continuous process improvement. “It’s hard to name another individual who can equal Bill’s wealth of knowledge about this business,” Moore said. “Through numerous mergers and acquisitions, Bill brought his impressive insight and analytical ability to bear. He is a master at managing change. His force of personality, a level of expertise that inspires respect, hands-on management style, and innate sense of fair play carried the mill division through the transition of the Smurfit and Stone merger. Bill is the consummate executive, a guy who gets things done, and a great friend.” Wandmacher will maintain an association with Smurfit-Stone as a special projects consultant.
