Ponsse Oyj and Vieremän Lämpö ja Vesi Oy have agreed on the supply and use of biogas.
Ponsse strives for carbon neutrality in operational activities and solutions. Ponsse Oyj replaces propane, which is used in the painting process of forest machines and is produced as a byproduct of fossil crude oil refining, with sustainably produced biogas. By introducing biogas, Ponsse Oyj will be able to reduce the carbon footprint of production operations to close to zero.
Vieremän Lämpö ja Vesi Oy delivers biogas to Ponsse Oyj from the Vieremän biogas terminal.
Ponsse’s annual consumption of liquefied petroleum gas has been approximately 70,000 kg, or 900 MWh. Last year, the consumption of liquefied gas accounted for more than 90 per cent of the carbon footprint of production in Vieremä. The shift to biogas will reduce Ponsse’s carbon footprint by roughly 215 t CO₂-eq. (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents) and marks a significant step to achieve the carbon neutrality goal set for Ponsse’s production.
The raw gas line implemented by the municipality of Vieremä and the biogas terminal of Vieremä Lämpö ja Vesi Oy enable the supply of sustainable biogas produced on local farms to the technology industry operating in the global market. Biogas combines the local and traditional agriculture, which is Vieremä's mainstay, and the global technology industry. The biogas supply contract also has a significant effect on the regional economy and vitality, because the cash flow of the entire production and use chain remains in the region.
