IKEA is constructing a store nearly 2 kilometres long in response to growing customer complaints about getting lost in its traditional maze-like layouts. The new linear format allows visitors to see the entire store from entrance to exit along a single straight aisle, according to IKEA Retail (Ingka Group).
Customers will enter at one end and walk—or ride a hop-on, hop-off travelator—directly through the store, which retains IKEA’s signature windowless design. A food court will be located at the midpoint of the building, with a dedicated “fast lane” travelator for diners who do not wish to shop.
The move follows internal research showing more shoppers relying on GPS indoors. IKEA’s chief operating officer Tolga Öncü noted that the aim is to reduce distractions and keep attention on products, not phones. He emphasized the goal is not to completely abandon the IKEA experience, but to adapt it.
Executives reportedly approved the redesign after security staff discovered a lost customer after closing hours, who had hidden inside a basket of soft toy snakes. Additional store concepts under consideration include one shaped like a giant meatball.
