Finnish timber trade rises 20% above five-year average, prices remain high

Timber trade volumes in Finland surged in August, surpassing the five-year average by 20%, with cumulative trade from January to August 7% higher than the previous year. Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) reports that trade volumes for logs were up 21%, while pulpwood trade rose by 11%.

Prices for timber remained high throughout August, with standing sales holding steady compared to July. The average price of spruce logs remained over Euro 82 per cubic metre, pine logs averaged Euro 79, and birch logs Euro 67. These figures represent more than a 10% increase in real terms over the previous year. Spruce pulpwood prices stayed above Euro 34, with birch and pine pulpwood averaging Euro 33, reflecting a 25-28% increase compared to last year.

While prices in delivery sales of pulpwood fell by 1-2% from July, they still ended the month 9-12% higher than last year, with spruce fetching Euro 52 per cubic metre, birch Euro 51, and pine Euro 50.

Timber trade in August continued to outpace the previous year’s levels by 25% and exceeded the five-year average by 20%, reflecting strong market activity in Finland’s forestry sector.
