Wood pellet production in Finland fell to 324,000 tonnes in 2024, marking a 9% decrease from the previous year. According to the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), exports nearly ceased, while imports rose sharply.
Pellet imports into Finland reached 183,000 tonnes, increasing by 31% year-on-year, based on data from Finnish Customs. The top three source countries were Estonia with 94,000 tonnes, Denmark with 26,000 tonnes, and Latvia with 21,000 tonnes.
Exports totaled only 400 tonnes in 2024, falling by 25% from the previous year. This continued the low export levels seen in recent years.
Apparent consumption of wood pellets in Finland reached 506,000 tonnes, reflecting a 3% increase. Of the domestic pellets, 290,000 tonnes were delivered locally, a 5% decline. This included 255,000 tonnes supplied to heating and power plants and large buildings, and 35,000 tonnes to households and agriculture.
