In 2022, Japan’s imports of wood pellets expanded 42% year-on-year to 4.4 million tonnes. The value of imports jumped 60% to $895 million. According to Lesprom Analytics, the average price of wood pellets grew 13% to $203 per tonne.
Vietnam’s share amounted to 54% of Japan’s total wood pellets imports in 2022. Vietnam is Japan’s biggest wood pellets exporter with second-ranked Canada at 31% of total exports, while the U.S. takes 7% and Malaysia 3%.
