Energywood prices in Finland increase sharply in Q3 2024

Energywood prices rose significantly in Finland in the third quarter of 2024, according to Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). The average price of logging residues climbed 61% from the second quarter, exceeding Euro 14 per m3. Pruned stems in standing sales rose by 8% to more than Euro 26 per m3. Additionally, trade volumes for energywood in January-September reached record highs, marking a one-third increase compared to the same period last year.

Nearly half of the energywood trade in Q3 involved logging residues, with the average standing sales price at Euro 14.4 per m3. This represents a 61% increase over the prior quarter and double last year’s average. In delivery sales, logging residues rose 15% to Euro 36 per m3, a 43% rise from last year’s average price.

Pruned stems accounted for two-fifths of the trade, with average standing sales prices reaching Euro 26.2 per m3, 37% higher than last year’s average. In delivery sales, the roadside price for pruned stems remained stable at Euro 46.2 per m3, a 5% increase from last year’s average.

A total of 1.2 million m3 of energywood trade was recorded in Q3, marking a 20% increase from a year earlier and nearly 50% higher than the five-year average. From January to September, trade volumes were up one-third year-on-year and 75% above the five-year average. Specifically, the trade in logging residues was nearly double the five-year average, while pruned stems traded at 1.2 times the average.
