Drax has introduced an enhanced sustainability strategy with 26 specific, time-bound targets, aiming to reach net zero across its value chain by 2040 and deliver biodiversity enhancements across all sites by 2030. The strategy was developed in consultation with scientists, academics, employees, investors, and environmental organizations, according to the company’s Sustainability Framework report.
The plan includes reducing supply chain emissions, increasing forest carbon monitoring, and integrating circular resource use. Drax has already cut total supply chain emissions by 27% since 2020 and plans to expand carbon removals through its Elimini business unit. By 2026, the company will provide scientific evidence on forest carbon stocks in all major biomass sourcing areas.
Biodiversity commitments include achieving net-positive biodiversity for all new developments globally by 2030 and implementing Nature Positive Action Plans across all operational sites. The company is also investing in water efficiency improvements and aims to be deforestation-free by 2026.
In 2023-24, Drax contributed £6.3 million to nonprofit organizations and local community projects. The company plans to further support underserved communities by expanding STEM education and green skills training programs by 2030.
