The U.S. Lumber Coalition is an alliance of large and small softwood lumber producers from around the United States that formed in 1985 to respond to the devastating effects of Canada's lumber subsidies on the U.S. lumber industry.
The aim of the Coalition is to effectively address Canada's unfair softwood lumber trade practices, including its gross under-pricing of timber. The Coalition asks Canadian provinces to allow fully open market competition to determine the price of timber. In the absence of such reforms, the U.S. lumber industry will continue to assert its rights under the U.S. trade laws to offset the unfair advantages provided to its Canadian counterparts by government subsidies and log export restrictions.
