Industrial roundwood harvesting reached 5.8 million m3 in Finland in September, marking an increase of 1.2 million m3, or 25%, compared to the same month last year, according to the new data from the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke).
From January to September, the total volume of roundwood harvested rose by 2% compared to the same period in 2023. Sawlog removals in September totaled 3.0 million m3, while pulpwood removals reached 2.9 million m3.
Non-industrial private forests contributed significantly to industrial roundwood removals, with 4.7 million m3 harvested—a 34% increase from the previous year. Forest industry companies’ and state-owned forests supplied an additional 1.2 million m3, showing a 4% increase year-over-year. Energywood removals reached 625,000 m3, with delimbed stems and whole trees accounting for 38% of this total.
For the period from January to September, commercial fellings of industrial roundwood totaled 43.9 million m3, up 2% from 2023 but 2% below the five-year average. Logs accounted for 19.9 million m3 of the total, up 7% from the previous year and 4% above the five-year average. Pine and spruce logs rose by 7% and 8%, respectively, while hardwood logs also grew by 8%.
Pulpwood harvesting, however, dropped by 2% to 24.0 million m3 compared to last year, with significant declines seen in hardwood pulpwood (-5%), spruce pulpwood (-1%), and pine pulpwood (-1%). Energywood felling reached 4.5 million m3, representing a 4% increase year-over-year and an 11% rise over the five-year average.
