Ence’s renewable energy generation plants with biomass in Villanueva del Arzobispo (Jaén) and Villarta de San Juan (Ciudad Real), have completed the audit process of the Sure verification scheme, which guarantees the full sustainability of the biomass consumed in its facilities, mainly olive pomace – remnants derived from the treatment of the olive for the extraction of the oil – a very abundant local biomass in the surroundings.
The development of the certification audits was carried out successfully and was recognized by the certifier, who congratulated Ence for the intense and detailed implementation work started by the company’s Sustainability team more than a year ago. With the completion of the process of verifying the requirements of the standard, these two plants become part of the select group of facilities certified by the Sure scheme in Europe.
Last July, Ence’s biomass generation plant in Mérida and the company’s biofactory in Pontevedra, became the two pioneering facilities in Europe to obtain this certification, making Ence the first company on the continent to start the process of verifying the sustainability of your biomass using this standard.
CEGANOR has once again been the entity responsible for auditing the process, since it is the only Spanish company recognized and authorized by the Sure scheme to perform this service. The SURE verification scheme is one of the tools developed to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (REDII), a European regulation that establishes various criteria that must be met by all biomass used in the bioenergy sector, focused on guaranteeing its sustainability, a correct mass balance, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency.
Ence is the first Spanish company in the production of renewable energy with agroforestry biomass. It has a total generation capacity of 266 MW in its independent power plants, to which are added 112 MW from its cellulose biofactories.
