Junnikkala Oy and Loimua Oy have agreed on a long-term co-operation in connection with the energy production and development of Junnikkala Oy's Oulainen sawmill in Finland. According to the agreement, Loimua will acquire the production infrastructure related to the energy production of the Junnikkala Oulainen sawmill and the production of district heating.
Loimua is investing in a flue gas scrubber and an industrial-grade heat pump for the boiler plant at the Oulainen sawmill, and is carrying out other basic improvement measures for the boiler plant. The total value of the investment is several million euros.
The investments to be made will significantly improve the sawmill's energy and resource efficiency and at the same time reduce the carbon footprint of energy production. Energy efficiency is increased e.g. utilizing the thermal energy contained in the flue gases in energy production. In addition, the investments will enable Junnikkala Oy to increase its sawn timber production in terms of the adequacy of thermal energy and its security of supply.
The investments will be completed in the latter part of 2022, when Loimua will take overall responsibility for the sawmill's energy production. In the future, Loimua will generate heat for the Oulainen sawmill on a turnkey basis. In the future, the boiler plant located in the sawmill area will also produce almost half of the district heating needs of Loimua's Oulainen customers.
The sawmill's boiler plant will be connected to the Loimua central control room, from where the production of the sawmill's boiler plant will be monitored and optimized.
Junnikkala and Loimua have also agreed on fuel procurement cooperation. In the future, Junnikkala will supply biofuels used at Loimua's Oulainen and Kärsämäki heating plants. Fuels are by-products of Junnikkala's sawmill operations and wood procurement. The district heating production in Oulainen and Kärsämäki is almost completely carbon neutral and produced with local fuels.
Junnikkala Oy is one of the world's most modern plants in the mechanical wood processing industry.
Loimua Oy produces district heat and sells and distributes district heat and natural gas.
