Ingka Group announces a substantial expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) charging network. The initiative includes the installation of 1,000 new charging points at IKEA locations throughout Germany. Set to complete by 2028, this move aims to ensure all 54 German stores are equipped with advanced charging infrastructure. This initiative is part of a broader effort, with installations also planned in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, totaling 1,000 chargers by the end of 2024.
Since 2020, Ingka Group has made EV charging accessible at all its worldwide customer points offering parking, boasting over 4,500 charging points to date. This expansion addresses the urgent need for more public EV charging facilities and greater grid capacity amidst the growing demand in the transport sector.
Himanshu Raj, Global Sustainable Mobility Leader at Ingka Group, emphasizes the role of the transport sector in community well-being and its significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions. Raj states, "The electrification of transport can enable cleaner air, quieter streets, and a reduced climate footprint for our business."
A recent 'Charging the EV Transition' report by the Climate Group highlights the surge in corporate electric car fleets to 630,000 EVs globally, a 57% increase from the previous year. However, challenges persist, particularly in markets with limited EV availability and insufficient charging infrastructure.
Karen Pflug, Ingka Group's Chief Sustainability Officer, underlines the importance of transitioning to EVs in meeting the company's climate commitments and fostering healthier, sustainable communities. Despite facing obstacles, Ingka Group remains committed to leading by example in the EV transition.
Ingka Group's dedication aligns with the Paris Agreement's goal to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. With ambitious targets set for 2030, including a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from travel and home deliveries, Ingka has already achieved 100% zero-emission home deliveries in 17 cities across 150 locations, utilizing over 1,200 electric vehicles globally.
